Myth #3: "'Organic' Cat Food Is Healthier"

“Organic Cat Food” Is A Meaningless Term

The Truth:

“Organic Cat Food” Is A Meaningless Term

The word “organic” has a strict definition when applied to human food. "Organic" has no legal meaning at all when used to describe and sell pet foods.

The general public is largely unaware that government regulations regarding foods for humans versus pets differ greatly. “Organic” on a food label is just one example.  As cat parents, we reasonably assume that the food we buy for them is overseen and labeled as our own food is. This is sadly untrue.

Much pet food company marketing depends heavily on exploiting this common misconception. “Organic,” when printed on a cat food label, is meaningless. It’s only a tool to create a subliminal impression of healthfulness.

Most vets are equally unaware of pet food industry laws and practices, especially as they pertain to cats.
